Roman Road E3...

A close look...

We are on the Roman Road, London E3 where I came across this bog standard pair of bollards with a slight twist/difference.

The design of bollard is made of cast iron and they can take one hell of a whack before they fracture/break. What is odd and must add to the expense is the indentations that allow the small road traffic signs to placed flush upon the body of the bollard.

With the London Olympic games just around the corner from these two sturdy looking bollards I'm sure the east of London and its Olympic venues will have plenty of bollards on offer waiting to be photographed be me and who knows maybe you.

ST. James Clerkenwell...

ST James Clerkenwell...

It was a rare summers day in London recently and I just happened to have dropped a fare off in Clerkenwell and I thought I would take a look at some local bollards.

Within 30 seconds I came across a common type of bollard (above/bottom) found upon many streets and roads however this particular bollard was actually marked up with the name of the local church 'ST. James Clerkenwell'. The only other real difference with this type/design of bollard was the 'cannon' ball top finish appears to protrude a little more than usual.

Clerkenwell is a rather pleasant part of central London and certainly worth a visit/wander, the site the church stands on has been a place of worship for the best part of 900 years. Please do visit the website www.jc-church.org if you wish to find out a little more about the church and the area surrounding this rather pleasant bollard.

John Islip Street SW1 and a #guestbollard from Hong Kong...

John Islip Street SW1...
Hong Kong bollard...
Welcome to John Islip Street SW1 where I found these two dandy/ornate (modern) bollards (top picture).

With a circular base that morphs into a rather uncomfortable looking tapering (outwards/inwards) octagonal body that eventually rises vertically to form a ridged/inlay style that tapers inwards via a curved part that leads to a large half ball shaped top that is finished off with a near spike/nipple top.

Our #guestbollard (above) feature is from Hong Kong and what a beautiful ornate looking bollard it is. Please do take a look at the blog/site www.gwulo.com where they've taken a look at street furniture. I must say this bollard really is a wonderful find and would certainly look great on any London street/road.

Penton Place SE17 to Singapore...

Penton Place SE17...
Sembawang, Singapore...

Welcome to SE17 or has many people know the area the Elephant and Castle where in Penton Place I found these rather huge concrete bollards (top) that protect a site that used to be home of a public house called the Giraffe.

This part of London has nearly always been a proud inner city working class area of the capital. The area took a hit when many of the locals lost well paid work in the print/Fleet Street however the Elephant and Castle is under going major change and this in the end can only be good for residents and the local economy.

Can I say a special thank you to @CharlesYap on the twitter who recently left our shores and headed off to Singapore and sent us this wonderful photograph of some pavement bollards (above) in the Sembawang district of Singapore. Bollards aren't just a London or British thing they are global and this is a great #guestbollard for the blog/site.

Regent's Park with #guestbollards from Brazil/France...

St Mary-le-bone...?

St Pancras Parish 1821...?

I was listening to the Robert Elms show on bbc London 94.9fm the other week and his guest was talking about to small posts/bollards within Regent's Park and out of interest I went and found them (above).

What a pair they happen to be, one made of stone with the markings 'S MB' could this be St Mary-le-bone and the smaller metal bollard 'St PP 1821' could this be St Pancras Parsih' ? I'll need to take a look at old maps of the parish/councils if we are to confirm that these mini-bollards mark former boundaries.

These two bollards are a remarkable find and not something you notice because of their size. London and its radio shows throw up gems all the time and Robert's show is always worth a listen on bbc radio London 94.9fm or i-player.

Tall thin Hexagonal bollards...

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil...

Yet again @nancyo on the Twitter has found some cracking bollards in Brazil with a beautiful statue/monument which happen to be our #guestbollard feature.

If you look closely you can see the tall thin hexagon shaped bollards with their red tops/caps (or not) which protect the lamp post from damage even though these have been clad/encased. If we take a look at the picture (above) we see the bollard stand out because of its red top but note the broken cannon which forms part of this statue/monument. Some of the original bollards here in London just happen to be cannons how ironic.

By pure chance yesterday I came across a tweet from @bbonthebrink who just happens to write a rather interesting blog and has even started to comment about bollards in France. Here's the link for her blog http://www.bbonthebrink.blogspot.com #thankyou.

Camden Bollards...

Regents Park Terrace NW1...

We are on Oval Road NW1 at the entrance of Regents Park Terrace (private road) where I came across a typical bog standard Camden/Westminster council bollard (above) that happens to be painted in a very different manner/way to what we are all used to seeing. The ribbed/ridged tapering part of the body/bollard is painted white.

To the right of the picture we see a much smaller bollard that challenges but doesn't beat 'Wapping (World's) Smallest Bollard' which was featured on this blog/site last year.

Now if you take a look below the very first (basic) design of a 'Bollards of London' badge has been created with 'George' our very own friendly London Policeman bollard featured. I'll be testing out a few more designs/pictures before I settle on the final look/choice so please feel free to leave a comment below and let me know what you think.

Congratulations your Majesty...

Parkgate Road, Battersea SW11...

What a weekend and what a sight London is right now with bunting and literally thousands of Union Jacks flying high in celebration of the Diamond Jubilee.

I found this rather new looking 'Wandsworth' wooden bollard (above) on Parkgate Road Battersea SW11 outside a local shop where some small Union Jacks had been attached and it just mad me smile.

On Friday morning I happened to be in central London where I took the picture of The Mall SW1 (below) doesn't it look beautiful when looking down towards Queen Victoria's Memorial/Buckingham Palace. If you want details of all that is going on this double bank holiday weekend/year please do click on the diamond jubilee logo on the right hand side of this blog/site.
